The Harley Davidson Sportster model has been in production since 1957 and rose to fame in the US in 1968 due to its appearance in the TV series "Then Came Bronson".
The Sporster has been offered in many different models based on the following base models:
- Harley Davidson Sportster XL Ironhead, 1957-1985 and came with the 900cc & 1000cc Ironhead engine with cast iron heads
- Harley Davidon Sportster XL Evolution (EVO), 1986 to present had the option of 883cc, 1100cc and 1200cc Evolution engine with allow heads
The Harley Sportster gets its juice from the venerable V-Twin engine which was mounted directly to the frame until 2003 when Harley started using rubber isolation mounts to reduce the vibration transferred to the driver. Some will say this took some of the "Harley Feel" from the bike.
It is notable to mention that Harley also made racing models of the Sportster. Not is more famous then Evil Knievel's XR-750 Harley Davidson Sportster which was a racing bike modified for jumping. One of Knievel's XR-750's is on display at the Smithsonian and worth the visit.

The Harley Davidson Softail is a classic in it's own right. Harley coined the term Softail in 1984 with the release of the FXST. The Harley Softail got its name due to the hidden rear suspension that give a smoother ride with the look of a rigid frame.
